Unpacking Meaning: Practical Analysis for Designers (And Others)

How can you use the script to develop productions that are expressive of the world of the script? How can you experiment with the material and challenge expectations without giving in to whim? How do you get beyond counting doors and windows, entrances and exits? There is a vast gulf between the script's page and the theatre's stage, and getting there requires more of the theatre artist than chasing novelty or falling back on simple, pragmatic necessities. Script analysis is the foundation of stage design, and fraught with perils and the temptation of "Wouldn't it be cool if..." This seminar explores one possible way of reading a script to develop deep and MEANINGFUL choices about the world of the play.
